Cookie Policy

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device (computer, phone, or tablet) when you visit a website. They help websites remember information about your visit, such as your preferences and login status.

Why We Use Cookies

We use cookies to make Shrewd work properly, keep you logged in, and — with your consent — understand how the service is used so we can improve it. We do not use cookies for advertising or tracking you across other websites.

Types of Cookies We Use

1. Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are essential for the Service to function. Without them, you cannot log in, upload bills, or view your dashboard. These cookies do not require your consent under GDPR because they are necessary to provide the service you requested.

Examples:
• Session cookies that keep you logged in while you use the Service
• Authentication tokens that verify your identity
• Security cookies that protect against unauthorised access

2. Analytics Cookies

These cookies help us understand how people use Shrewd, which pages are visited most, and where users encounter problems. This information is aggregated and anonymised — we cannot identify individual users from it. We ask for your consent before using these cookies.

Examples:
• Counting page visits and navigation patterns
• Measuring how long people spend on different pages
• Identifying which features are used most frequently

3. Third-Party Cookies

Some cookies are set by third-party services we use to operate Shrewd:

Sentry (Error Monitoring): Sentry uses browser local storage and session storage to help us detect and diagnose technical errors. With your analytics consent, Sentry also captures anonymised session replays on a small sample of visits to help us reproduce bugs. Sentry's privacy policy is available at sentry.io/privacy.

PostHog (Product Analytics): With your analytics consent, PostHog sets cookies to understand which features of Shrewd are used and where people get stuck. PostHog is configured to use EU hosting and to anonymise IP addresses. PostHog's privacy policy is available at posthog.com/privacy.

Stripe (Payment Processing — when payments are enabled): When paid features are enabled and you make a payment, Stripe may set cookies to process your transaction securely and prevent fraud. The Service is currently free to invited users and Stripe cookies are not set. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.

How Long Cookies Last

Session Cookies: These are temporary and are deleted when you close your browser. Used for login sessions and security.

Persistent Cookies: These remain on your device for a set period (typically 30 days to 1 year) or until you delete them. Used for preferences and analytics.

Managing Your Cookie Preferences

Consent Banner: When you first visit Shrewd, you will see a cookie consent banner. You can choose to accept all cookies or customise your preferences to accept only strictly necessary cookies.

Changing Your Preferences: You can change your cookie preferences at any time by clicking the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer of any page, or by emailing us at privacy@shrewd.ie.

Browser Settings: You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:
• View which cookies are stored and delete them individually
• Block all cookies or only third-party cookies
• Set rules for specific websites

Instructions for common browsers:
Chrome
Firefox
Safari
Edge

Impact of Blocking Cookies: If you block strictly necessary cookies, you will not be able to log in or use the Service. If you decline analytics cookies, the Service will still work normally; we will simply have less information to help us understand where it is hard to use and improve it.

Local Storage and Similar Technologies

In addition to cookies, we may use similar technologies such as browser local storage to store small amounts of data on your device. This is used for similar purposes to cookies (session management, preferences) and is covered by the same consent mechanisms.

Updates to This Cookie Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the cookies we use or legal requirements. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.

If we introduce new types of cookies that require consent, we will ask for your consent before using them.
